Blue Monday

16th January 2023

Blue Monday is the name given to a day in January (typically the third Monday of the month) said to be the most depressing day of the year! Blue Monday was first coined by the now defunct UK travel company ‘Sky Travel’.

They even came up with an equation to prove the theory.

Where W=weather, D=debt, d=monthly salary, T=time since Christmas, Q=time since the failure of new year’s resolutions, M=low motivational levels, and Na=the feeling of a need to take action.

While there is no scientific evidence to support the theory, we can only suppose this was a marketing department’s dream to use as a means of persuading us all to book our summer holidays.

This year Blue Monday falls on 16th January. So, putting aside the complete lack of any scientific evidence what can we do to lift ourselves out of the Blues in January apart from booking a holiday and possibly increasing the ‘level of debt’ number in the Blue Monday equation!

It’s not too late to choose a New Year resolution or replace the one you may have already failed at. There’s a great list of ideas here to ponder, all would make us feel better about ourselves in some way, without having to always be ‘giving something up’;  a random act of kindness, giving a compliment every day, keeping a gratitude journal, all benefitting not only ourselves but others too.

As they say, FOCUS ON THE POSITIVE.

According to research it takes on average 66 days for something to become a habit. So, in theory, we only need to achieve our New Year’s resolution for just over 2 months and we’ll being doing it without even thinking about it.

Why not give it a go, it might just change your life and potentially someone else’s too.
