We all have those memories of long and in many cases boring, maths and English lessons at school. Often it fills us with dread as adults when asked to study towards a maths and English qualification as part of a course. The good news is, there is an alternative qualification to a GCSE/GCE which is known as Functional Skills, at level 2 this is an equivalent to the modern GCSE grade 4 formerly known as a C.
Functional skills unlike GCSE’s are different, in the sense the topics covered are built around skills that you may need for problem solving in a life or workplace situation, whereas GCSE’s are based on pure maths.
Here at RHG, we make the journey to towards a successful achievement in these subjects as stress-free as possible.
Firstly, we find out what your current level of ability is using a ‘quiz like’ question bank, this is followed by an assessment based quiz to see what topics you need to brush up on. Neither of these are a pass or fail assessments, it just gives us a picture of where we need to support you and are shared with no one but you and the tutor. Once this is completed, you will be supported by myself – a qualified dedicated maths and English tutor. The topics you need are then delivered in bite size sessions either in a group or one to one via Zoom.
My sessions are relaxed and are designed to help you understand topics you may have found difficult in the past using relevant contextual situations, e.g. how to calculate percentages using a real life situation where maybe you would be in a shop buying a discounted product. Or writing a report for a senior manager. No long boring sessions on Algebra or dissecting a literary piece that has no relevance to modern life!
Here’s what some previous learners have said after successfully gaining Level 2 functional skills qualifications:
I look forward to working with you all.
