At this time of year many of us are focused on keeping our houses warm and lit, and after yet another record-breaking warm Autumn, now is a perfect time to find ways to do this that not only help our wallets, but also our planet.
While wider systemic changes are needed to make our energy systems more sustainable and efficient, we can each do our bit to reduce demand on the grid and limited natural resources.
We consume energy through our lights, fridges, freezers, phone chargers, TVs, kettles, ovens, boilers…
When you get a moment this week, take 5 minutes to look around your home and take stock. Be curious, as if seeing everything for the first time…
What in your home uses energy?
Which items are on and using power?
Which items are on standby?
Which lights are on in your home?
What temperature is your heating set to?
Are there any drafts around your home?
When was the last time your boiler was serviced?
Make a mental (or physical) list.
How many of these items need to be plugged in or on standby? Which lights need to be on? How might those drafts be stopped? How much money could you save on your next energy bill?
