Over‑reliance can also reduce collaboration at work, where people may turn to a tool instead of colleagues. This can weaken interpersonal skills and team dynamics over time.

Some argue that this growing dependence could even reduce creativity and independent thought at a societal level. Others believe the opposite—that AI can free us from mundane responsibilities, allowing more time for innovation. The safest path likely lies in finding a balance: using AI as a support, not a substitute for our own judgement and capability.

Bias and Fairness: When AI Gets It Wrong

Why Passing Off AI Work as Your Own Is a Problem

AI can produce full emails, essays, articles, images and videos—but presenting this output as one’s own comes with risks.

In education, students who rely on AI may miss out on developing essential skills and could struggle in assessments where AI is prohibited. With academic institutions now using detection tools, misuse can lead to serious consequences, including formal misconduct proceedings.

In professional settings, passing off AI‑generated content as personal work can damage credibility and lead to a loss of trust. It may also mislead colleagues who assume someone is coping well with workload pressures, only to discover later that the output was not their own.

There is also the issue of intellectual credit. AI often draws on material without clear attribution, meaning original creators may not receive recognition for their contributions. Over time, heavy reliance on AI may even affect the overall skills and knowledge base of the workforce.

AI and the Future of Work

One of the biggest public concerns is how AI will reshape industries and employment.

In some sectors, AI may automate tasks previously done by humans, particularly in routine or entry‑level roles. This could reduce opportunities and increase unemployment in certain fields. Some believe that responsibility for reducing environmental impact should fall mainly on developers and tech companies. However, individuals can also help by making small changes—such as keeping prompts concise or choosing traditional search engines when appropriate.

On the positive side, AI is increasingly being used to support environmental science, from monitoring ecosystems to predicting climate patterns. In the right hands, AI can be a powerful tool for protecting the planet.
