July 2025
As we roll through the midway point of the year, Summer is in full swing and it’s almost a year since we were talking about the Paris Olympics and the fact they were aiming to be the most sustainable Games ever. So did they succeed?
For starters a World Health Organization (WHO) study on the level of physical activity and sport among teenagers in 146 countries had put France in 119th place. The ambition became to bring a ’30 minutes of daily physical activity’ programme into schools, to instil healthy lifestyle habits at an early age. Initially trialled in 700 schools, reports already show the positive impact on pupils. President Emmanuel Macron has said he wants to expand this further, taking the programme to every school and increasing it to an hour of physical activity every day by 2026.
The swimming pool arena was the only purpose built facility for Paris 2024 and has become the centre of excellence for French swimming. Alongside this, in an area where half of 11 years olds have never learnt to swim, the local Council launched the “1,2,3 Swim!” programme enabling children, and their parents, to learn to swim free of charge.
With 6,000 new residents taking up occupancy of the Olympic Village, the ‘re-use and re-purpose’ ethos really carried through. The Paris 2024 legacy seems to be on an upward trajectory and with the 2030 Winter Olympic Games also going to France, their vision of a fit and healthy society, requiring less reliance on their health services, seems on course.
July marks Disability Pride Month which for the UK, is a celebration of our 16 million disabled people.
Disability Pride is about celebrating disabled identity. It’s not the same as LGBTQ+ Pride, though some people identify with both communities. It’s an opportunity to raise awareness, start positive conversations and to celebrate the diversity and strength of the disabled community.
3 in 4 disabled people have experienced negative attitudes.
This Disability Pride Month change the conversation.

Finally, here are some more observances to note:

| France Bastille Day | 14th | France’s National Day marks the storming of the Bastille (a medieval fortress-turned-prison in Paris used by the king to imprison political opponents) on July 14, 1789.
