Diversity, Wellbeing & Environment Calendar

June is packed with significant dates, whether that be days, weeks or the whole month.

One in particular has been alighted on by the team at RHG – World Wellbeing Week, 26-30 June.  Look out for lots of ways for you to get involved and join us for events and talks.

We took a poll from our Learners for topics to cover and we’re planning sessions on Mindfulness, Sleep and Nutrition to name but three.

Follow us on social media to keep completely up to date with what we will be doing.

Elsewhere, June is Pride month and is celebrated around the world. Did you know that Pride was established in 1970? Take a 60 second tour of the history of Pride by watching the video below:

There are also significant ‘weeks’ to celebrate in June:

Let’s start with Volunteers Week, 1-7 June. Here at RHG we encourage all of our staff to take part in some kind of volunteer role, allowing time to do so and share experiences as well.

Whether you have lots of spare time or very little, you can always make a difference to someone else’s life. If you’re not sure where to start, read some volunteers stories here – https://volunteersweek.org/volunteering-stories/ and think about what you can do.

Next up is Bike Week, 5-11 June. If we look at commuting to work alone the statistics are shown below are quite staggering. Its true that if we all make a small change, big changes will happen. Time to get pedalling? Read more here and dust off that bike out in the shed! https://www.cyclinguk.org/bikeweek

  1. Transport is the UK’s most emitting sector, making up 24% of emissions in 2020
  2. Commuting accounts for 98% of an individual’s work-related carbon footprint
  3. 45.1% of UK commuters travel to work by car, and only 2% do so by bike
  4. As many as three million commuters travel as little as two kilometres to work, making an uptick in active commuting one of the most actionable ways to drive down corporate emissions
  5. On top of the environmental benefits, evidence indicates that an active workforce is a happier, healthier and more productive one

Lastly, we are alighting on Learning Disability Week, 20-26 June, which this year is all about ‘myth busting’.   Take a look at the video below to learn more…

Other key days in June:

There is so much going on this month, but here are just a few more days that we have selected for you:

World Environment Day | 5th June

Solutions to plastic pollution

More than 400 million tonnes of plastic is produced every year worldwide, half of which is designed to be used only once. Of that, less than 10 per cent is recycled.

An estimated 19-23 million tonnes end up in lakes, rivers and seas annually. That is approximately the weight of 2,200 Eiffel Towers all together.

Microplastics – tiny plastic particles up to 5mm in diameter – find their way into food, water and air. It is estimated that each person on the planet consumes more than 50,000 plastic particles per year –and many more if inhalation is considered.

Discarded or burnt single-use plastic harms human health and biodiversity and pollutes every ecosystem from mountain tops to the ocean floor.

International Day of the Celebration of the Solstice | 21 June

A solstice — derived from the Latin sol (“sun”) and sistere (“to stand still”), because the seasonal movement of the Sun’s daily path (as seen from Earth) appears to “stand still” at a northern or southern limit before reversing direction — is an event that occurrs when the Sun reaches its most northerly or southerly day-arc relative to the equator. Therefore, there are two solstices that occur annually: around June 21 (commonly known as “Summer Solstice” for being the first day of summer and the longest day of the year) and December 21 (commonly known as “Winter Solstice” for being the first day of winter and the shortest day of the year).

The solstices, together with the equinoxes, are connected with seasons, harvists and livelihood. Therefore, many cultures celebrate various combinations of the solstices, the equinoxes, and the midpoints between them, leading to various holidays arising around these events.

International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking | 26 June

Addressing drug challenges in health and humanitarian crises.

From warzones to refugee camps to communities torn apart by violence, people in all parts of the world are in dire need. A pandemic, a climate crisis, a food crisis, an energy crisis, and supply chain disruptions have increased suffering and taken us to the brink of global recession. This World Drug Day, UNODC addresses existing and emerging transnational drug challenges stemming from situations of crisis.

UNODC continues to advocate to protect the right to health for the most vulnerable, including children and youth, people using drugs, people with drug use disorders and people who need access to controlled medicines.
