Darker mornings may be upon us and the clocks may well change at the end of this month, bringing British Summer Time to an end, but there are many diverse and key dates during the month to focus on and learn more about.

Starting with Black History Month and the theme ‘Reclaiming Narratives’.

The RHG Grow Academy, has some great free workshops coming up, to refresh knowledge, learn new skills, and generally support the learning experience.

Our own Learning Coaches deliver the workshops and its a great opportunity to find out more about fellow learners on different programmes, to share experiences and challenges too.

• Hindu: Navratri – October 3 – 12 – One of the largest Hindu festivals honors the Goddess Durga who destroyed the demon Mahishasura after battling him for nine days and nights. This is one of two separate Hindu nine-night festivals celebrated throughout the year. The day is enjoyed with worship at the temple, sacred scriptures recitation, and dancing.
• Jewish: Rosh Hashanah – October 3 – 4 – The Jewish New Year is the beginning of the Jewish High Holy Days, ten days of repentance and introspection known as the Days of Awe. Communities come together to pray and blow the shofar, a ram’s horn.
• Jewish: Yom Kippur: October 12 -The Day of Atonement is one of the holiest days in the Judaism. It’s a time to seek forgiveness and to repent for sins committed throughout the year. Most people wear white on this holiday – married men usually wear a white robe called a kittle.
• Pagan and Wiccan: Samhain – October 31 – This significant Celtic holiday marks the end of the harvest season and the start of winter. In its history, Celtic tribes held assemblies where the rulers and warriors made laws.
• Halloween – October 31 – Traditionally known as All Hallows’ Evening, Halloween 2024 falls on Thursday, October 31. It is always held on the eve of the Christian festival of All Saints’ Day on November 1 and marks the start of the three-day observance of Allhallowtide, which ends with All Souls’ Day on November 2.

And lastly, don’t forget the clocks will ‘fall back’ by one hour at 2am on 27 October 2024, returning us from British Summer Time or Daylight Saving Time, to Greenwich Mean Time.
