After such a glorious Summer and the blackberries having come and almost gone from the hedgerows already, it may feel like the Autumn switch was flicked over a little early but do you know when Autumn officially starts?

There are two moments each year when the sun lies directly above ‘the Tropics’ (lines of latitude circling the earth directly above and below the equator). These moments are referred to as Solstice.

Whereas an Equinox is when neither pole points towards the sun, meaning the sun lies directly above the equator and again this happens twice in a calendar year.

Meteorological seasons begin on the first day of the month including the equinox or solstice.

Astronomical seasons use the actual dates of the equinox or solstice.

That’s the long way around to saying Autumn officially starts, in Meteorological terms on the 1st September, or in Astronomical terms on the Autumn equinox; 22nd September.
