During September an Equinox occurs on the 22nd, meaning the Sun shines directly on the Equator and the length of day and night is nearly equal.

Seasons are opposite on either side of the Equator, so the equinox in the Northern Hemisphere is considered the first day of Autumn, whereas in the Southern Hemisphere, it marks the first day of Spring.

And why is it called “Equinox”? The word is derived from the Latin meaning “equal night”.
